President Donald Trump said Thursday evening that the United States is eliminating the specific tariffs on new goods from October 1.
In social posts separate facts, Trump announced that he is installing a 100 % tariff on branded or registered pharmaceutical products and 25 % tariff on “heavy (large!) Trucks.
In April, the Ministry of Commerce began researching the pharmaceutical and transportation sectors. Trump also said in August that his government had begun “tariff investigations” about importing furniture, with plans to pay tolls within 50 days.
Although Trump did not mention previous probes on Thursday, he cited national security as a rational reason for the truck and furniture tariffs. Section 232 focuses on evaluating the national security consequences of imported goods.
The president has threatened drug import tariffs several times since he returned to the White House and has said in August that they could reach 250 %. At that time, he said he would start with a “small tariff” before the next year and a half. It is still unclear whether this is planned by the government.
The announcement is published the same month when the Trump administration expanded its list of sections under paragraph 232. On September 2, the Ministry of Commerce conducted a research on personal protective equipment, medical equipment, and devices, while opening a similar review of robotics and industrial machinery.
The Trump administration has done several tasks using Section 232, including steel and aluminum, as well as cars and automotive parts. Meanwhile, the trade department is still investigating goods such as semiconductors that can lead to additional tariffs.
Some of the specific tariffs in the sector have been regulated under the tariff transactions and framework agreements that the United States has done with business partners such as the European Union and Japan. However, Trump did not provide details on how these new tariffs affect these agreements.
