Novelis, a major supplier of aluminum sheet to the automotive industry, reported Friday that cold milling and heat treating operations at its Oswego, New York, plant are back up after a second fire in the past three months.
In a joint statement with the automaker, Novelis said the facility continued to ship finished materials to Ford Motor Company, one of its major customers, as of Friday. According to the statement, the auto supplier planned to continue using alternative resources, including its global network of factories, to mitigate the impact of disruptions at the plant.
Novelis said it is committed to strengthening the aluminum supply chain in the United States and plans to build a new plant in Bay Minette, Alabama. The statement said that the company expects to start operating the facility in the second half of next year. Novelis and Ford declined to provide further details.
A September fire at the Oswego plant severely damaged Novelis’ hot plant, a key ingredient in aluminum production. Novelis expects the hot plant to be back online by the end of December, according to a Nov. 11 update.
Meanwhile, Ford reported in October that aluminum supply disruptions will cut F-Series truck production by 90,000 to 100,000 units in the current quarter.
