According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice dated Oct. 28, Macy’s is closing an operating unit at its distribution center in South Windsor, Connecticut, affecting 106 employees.
According to the announcement, the retailer will make the layoffs in its “behind-the-scenes operations” in phases between December 28, 2025 and January 10, 2026. Warehouse associates, operations managers, warehouse leaders and ARO coordinators are among the affected positions. All dismissals will be permanent.
Affected employees will receive information about severance opportunities and transfer to open positions at nearby Macy’s locations. However, the workers in the facility have According to WARN filings, there is no right to strike and is not represented by a union
“Macy’s, Inc. continues to streamline and modernize its supply chain to better serve customers and operate more efficiently,” a Macy’s spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive in an email. “As part of this, we are ending Backstage operations at our South Windsor, CT facility and concentrating them at our dedicated facility in Columbus, OH. Other operations will continue in South Windsor.”
The retailer is working on its “bold new season” transformation plan to right-size its supply chain network to save. As part of the plan, the retailer expects a change in distribution network to help improve profitability.
Macy’s efforts also include expanding the use of automation, such as the recently opened distribution center in China Grove, North Carolina. The center, which opened on October 16, has the largest storage capacity and highest productivity potential in the retailer’s network, according to a company press release.
“Over the past two years, we’ve tested and learned from automation at other sites, refining how it can make our operations more efficient and our colleagues work safer and smarter,” Sean Barbour, vice president of supply chain, said in the statement. “Now, we’re building on these lessons with our state-of-the-art deployment, including the first new warehouse management system that offers greater accuracy, flexibility and speed.”
